Wistar institute in Philadelphia, USA, partnering with Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC )
The Wistar Institute and the LUMC will launch an international postdoctoral training program in immunology, cancer research and vaccine biology for recent PhD graduates. Due to the historical connections established by Dr. Hubert Schoemaker between Wistar and Centocor and their early relationship to the successful development of the Leiden Bio Science Park where Centocor’s manufacturing facility was built, Wistar and LUMC have set up a formal postdoctoral exchange program for PhD students trained at the LUMC in the Netherlands.
A unique aspect of the proposed program is that it ultimately would benefit both Wistar and the Netherlands. The program will provide fellows with an opportunity to further their scientific knowledge, advance basic scientific research, and promote scientific exchange and collaboration between investigators in the Netherlands and the United States. Most importantly, it would contribute to developing local infrastructure, advancing the region’s scientific, intellectual, economic, and human capital by supporting the scientists’ return home at the completion of their studies.

A new take on the FOS course ‘Cutting-edge immunology: from chemistry to metabolism’
From the 19th till the 23rd of October, 2020 the lectures of the annual four-week Frontiers of Science (FOS) course on cutting-edge immunology took place. This year though, the setup of the course was completely different from the years prior say both coordinators Arnaud Zaldumbide, associate professor at LUMC’s Cell and Chemical Biology department, and Bruno Guigas, assistant professor at the Department of Parasitology at the LUMC; a setup that proved to be “very rewarding in the end”, says Zakdumbide. And, as Guigas mentions: “Stepping out of our comfort zone really meant fresh blood for the course.”
Global Strategic Partnerships

Global Research projects
LUMC has a strong history of conducting top quality research. See how researchers at the LUMC have contributed to groundbreaking academic medical research throughout the years in our Research Gallery of Fame. The LUMC is also delighted to be/have been host Institution for a large number of European Research Council (ERC) projects, as well as Horizon2020 grants. Find an overview here. Check out some of our projects: Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), Corona medical masks, Affordable MRI, Parasitic Infections.
LUMC acts as magnet for talent, has a significant number of international students and encourages its own students to gain international experience. LUMC Global is fostering a model where research and education are intertwined and focused on several selected centers worldwide. We offer curricular courses, electives (half minors), research internships and two master’s degree programs in English: Vitality & Ageing and Biomedical Sciences, open to both local and international students. We also offer an excellence programme in Population Health Management. The normally offered summer schools for this year were canceled due to COVID-19. International students interested in doing (part of) their studies at LUMC can find more information here.
